New Day - New Corporations
Change is on the agenda - for our goverment, for our schools, and most definitely for our marketplace. Introducing BCorporations, a growing number of "beneficial corporations" that write their social and environmental commitmentsinto their by-laws, ensuring that directors have a legal responsibility to consider value mission if they want to sell the company and that investors understand that the commitment to social and environmental factors isn’t negotiable. B Lab's founders started B Lab after selling their values-based shoe company and watching as the company's social and environmental proposition was eliminated immediately afterwards. What resulted was the creation of a third-party certification with a holistic, unified set of standards for responsible business. B Corporations must meet comprehensive performance standards that evaluate not only how "green" they are, but also how they act toward their employees and the community. One B Corporation describes, “We thought of ourselves as a holistic and giving company when we first formed, but taking the B Corporation Survey opened up our eyes...It’s a transparent mark of objective integrity, and a commitment to always improve and do better.” In just two years over 145 businesses across the country have become B Corporations, ranging from restaurants to law firms. Join SBNYC and B Lab's Co-Founder, Bart Houlahan, on January 29th to learn more and hear from SBNYC members IceStone, BBMG and SustainableParty.com about their experience of becoming B Corporations.

It's Win-Win for SBNYC Members
The local non-profit Envirolution (Lead It! Live It!) – which coaches student teams using real world, Building Performance Institute and energy efficiency training to prepare them for Green Collar Jobs in the emerging economy – will bring the Win-Win campaign to the NYC streets in February. They're offering SBNYC business owners free energy efficiency assessments plus guidance to, & through, 7 key (some free) upgrade incentives that save real money on monthly costs - permanently! Energy-, carbon- and monetary savings for local businesses will be tracked online through Win-Win with a free, user-friendly, online resource management system from MakeMeSustainable.com – the Carbon Footprinting Social Network.

To learn about the Win-Win Campaign and be considered for participation in their free pilot program, check out the 9-slide powerpoint presentation at www.winwin.envirolution.org or contact Win-Win’s Executive Director, Janna Olson, at janna@envirolution.org

Member Spotlight

If you think graphic design is just an extravagant expense, you need to read on. A good design will communicate your story well, make your information easy to find and understand, and will bring in more customers. It will give you that competitive edge; it will be the foundation, the packaging and branding of your message. “I worked in corporations for over 15 years before going out on my own. I like the simplicity of working directly with people, to learn all I can about the business, to work within individual needs and to problem solve – to give your business that extra push. I have worked for corporations, non profits, and small businesses, but am at my best one-on-one. “For every job, I analyze the best way to deliver a useful piece with as little waste as possible, as sustainable as possible. I deliver sustainable, smart design. “I was so excited when SBNYC started, right down the block and became a member early on.”
