Local SBNYC Joins National BALLE
September marked SBNYC's induction into the national organization Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, most commonly known as BALLE ("bah-lee"). As a member of SBNYC, you are part of a national group of 15,000 entrepreneurs working to support thriving local economies and sustainable communities. Click here to read the full press release and click the logo below to learn more about BALLE!

We're A Business To Business Network
Jacob Susman, CEO of OwnEnergy, understands that the strength of the SBNYC network exists in member-to-member relationships. When OwnEnergy moved into their new office space in DUMBO in May, they first looked to other SBNYC businesses for goods and services, using Bettencourt Green Building Supplies for their no-VOC paint and conference room table and Go Green Inc. for their weekly cleaning service. In fact, Jacob Susman also looks to SBNYC as a New York City resident, employing fellow member Movers Not Shakers to help him move him and his family from Manhattan to Brooklyn! How can SBNYC members help you operate and grow your business?

Defining Your Market
taken from Values Sell by Nadine A. Thompson & Angela E. Soper
part of the Social Venture Network Book Series

1. Target a specific segment of the population, but be open to adjusting your strategy as your business grows. Your product may initially fit a specific niche market, but consider ways you can eventually broaden your customer base as your business grows. Look down the road - in the early planning stages - and think about how you might offer adidtional benefits that will attract a new segment of the population.

2. Focus on your initial product mission. As you create new products, stay true to your initial product vision. If, for example, your business was founded on creating a product from recycled materials, remain true to this idea as you develop new products.

3. Find out where your customers are and go to them. At first blush, such a prospect may seem overwhelming. The initial step is to determine the types of events that best suit your product. For example, if your product serves a particular type of customer, then locate events that attract that type of individual. It takes time and booth expenses, so target your sales as carefully as possible. Word-of-mouth advertising can be a powerful tool.

4. Keep an open mind. Remember that your product may wind up appealing to customers you never considered in the early planning stages. Be willing to explore new avenues for expansion and ways to best serve these new customers.

5. Connect. Develop relationships with those who are selling your product. If you sell to retail stores, find out what the retailers like about your product and how it enhances their business. Visit their stores as often as you can and get a true feel for their operations. If you can't visit, phone periodically. Again, listen to retailers' feedback and the comments they ar ewilling to share with you about their customers' reactions to your product.

Member Spotlight

www.tristatebiodiesel.com

Tri-State Biodiesel is a NYC-based company dedicated to providing the city and surrounding region with clean, renewable Biodiesel fuel. Founded by local environmentalists and entrepreneurs, Tri-State Biodiesel is proud to bring this exciting new home-grown fuel to the NYC area and to be the first company to market biodiesel to private fleets in NYC. We use a vertically integrated, urban approach to production, making all our products from recycled cooking oils and providing removal of waste cooking oil to New York City absolutely free of charge. Our fuel can be used in any diesel equipment and in #2 boilers as Bio-heating oil; it reduces emissions by about 75%, and is about 90% less toxic than petroleum diesel. Last year, biodiesel made from our cooking oil displaced about 7 million pounds of global warming gases from the atmosphere and made the air we breathe less toxic. As we transition to a more sustainable city, it is vitally important for local businesses leading the way to support one another to assist in mutual success - by supporting Tri-State Biodiesel you are supporting a sustainable future for New York and a brighter future for everyone!
