Introducing Sustainable Business Network NYC
Over 130 local business leaders came together on January 31 to celebrate the much anticipated launch of the Sustainable Business Network NYC, the newest chapter of BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) and a program of the Center for the Urban Environment. The excitement and energy at the launch was palpable, with attendees agreeing on the importance of environmental and social responsiblility where they live and do business. By the end of the evening a Bronx developer connected with a green roof consultant for a community-based project, an artists' cooperative found rental space for their start-up, and a Brooklyn business was introduced to an organic catering company for their upcoming Earth Day party. The success of the evening was telling of the need for the Sustainable Business Network NYC, whose mission is to connect, support and promote NYC owned and operated businesses.SBNYC envisions a sustainable economy that builds long-term economic empowerment and prosperity through local business ownership, economic justice, cultural diversity, and environmental stewardship. If we walked away from the launch with one thing, it was the knowledge that New York is ready.

Why Locally Owned & Operated?
New York City's locally owned businesses are what make our city unique, which is likely a factor in our decision to live here! Locally owned businesses invest in the community, foster long-term employment, create diversity of products and goods, often have reduced environmental impact, and represent the needs of the community. In addition, money spent at locally owned and operated businesses is recirculated and invested in our communities, rather than being sent out of state to headquarters. Member Spotlight

www.moversnotshakers.com
Movers, Not Shakers!, Inc. is a New York based moving company that combines the hallmarks of a well-run service based company with environmentally sustainable practices. All of our trucks run on biodiesel from Tri-State Biodiesel, LLC. To offset our remaining footprint, we support Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and in particular we’re involved with their educational Earth Day initiatives. We recently trademarked our GothamBoxesTM line of reusable bins, which are delivered to our customers prior to their move, used in place of cardboard and tape, and picked up by us after the move, before they are cleaned and returned to inventory to be reused up to hundreds of times.
